      <image:title>Blog - Habit Change Mechanisms and Speed</image:title>
<image:caption>The science of habit change is a continually growing field that has morphed many times over since its inception in the late 1800s. While the community first looked at the function of "automaticity" and how behaviors become automatic, it has grown to explore functions of motivation, drive, attitude, interference, and goal-setting. Essentially, its the science of why people do the things that they do and how people can achieve whatever they'd like to. Habits have also been defined in many different contours. Some scientists have explained them as repeated behaviors that reflect internal representations and maps. Other have defined them as automatic behaviors crafted from procedural memory and attitudes that are executed regardless of outcome (aka habits don't care about our goals). Interestingly, regions of the brain have been identified that are related to habit, and they are not more sophisticated in humans than in other mammalian species. In other words, habits are so automated that they can be enacted at no higher levels of sophistication than a mouse! However, some studies have found that habits can be intercepted by goal-oriented logical control from other human brain regions. Which indicates that we do have the power to change them--it just takes a lot of work.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - The Wise Mind</image:title>
<image:caption>One highly effective strategy in psychology that spread beyond its own domain is the concept of "the wise mind." The term was originally created in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) for individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). DBT is a mode of psychotherapy developed to help individuals better self-regulate their own emotions and improve their relationships when they are suffering from intense, sweeping emotions, as in personality disorders like BPD or Narcissistic Personality Disorders (NPD). The "wise mind" emerged as a regulating tool for individuals who are deep in their reactivity and self-protective modes. As it turns, this tool benefits most people, including those with anxiety, depression, disordered eating, and marital or relationship issues. The structure of the wise mind concept is something like this: a person (everyone) has many constant, rapid thoughts and emotions. Most of these are rooted in the ego. The ego is the subconscious set of belief systems that each person develops for a multitude of reasons. The ego is protective, reactive, and highly emotional. It's also often not rooted in the present reality. And this part of the mind drives most people's emotions and behavior. Its a lot like standing in the middle of the highway with hundreds of cars flying by, and jumping into each one as it speeds by (believing and acting on the thought).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Why are People So Confused about Nutrition?</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the most challenging components of nutrition itself is undoubtedly the confusion surrounding nutrition science. The relentless stream of misinformation, myths, trends, and axioms that are rooted in little-to-no scientific evidence is so severe in nutrition, that its now actually a topic of research itself! A recent study by Marton et al examined the "advocacy and quackery" in the top 100 nutrition books and investigated all major claims in each book plus the authors themselves. Here are some key takeaways from what they found: Entrepreneurs, trainers, physicians, actors, bloggers, and "other" non-nutrition-related occupations constitute 64% of the pool of nutrition book authors Those who study nutrition at the graduate and research levels, such as Registered Dietitians and Biochemists, were barely 6% of authors One author was listed by "Quackwatch" as an individual who "promotes questionable methods/advice"; another was investigated for research fraud and then retired; one author lost his license to practice medicine and was investigated by the DA of NY for promoting unfounded health practices; another author received letters of warning from the FDA; and another was convicted for misrepresenting the content of his books, among some other crimes, and went to jail The authors of this study concluded that "the large majority" of the top 100 nutrition books "contain substantial misinformation and claims that have no scientific foundation." Oof. This is a serious problem. But how do we solve it?</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Art and Science of Self-Assessment</image:title>
<image:caption>"I couldn't read the label from inside the bottle," my client remarked while she put her chin in her hands, muffling a laugh. "I can't believe I told you that I'm not an emotional eater in our first session. It's the number one problem that's been going on in my food life! I can see it so clearly now. But how did I miss that? It scares me to think about what else I might be missing." Her eyes widened, tinged with fear. "Is this normal? I mean, do we all just not know who we are?" I felt the weight of this thought alongside her. It can be a lot to process something that feels so vivid yet so foreign. The overwhelm that was sweeping over her was coming from multiple directions -- the clarity she suddenly had acquired was shocking, but the realization that she had missed this blind spot for years was alarming to her. How can someone be in their own brain but now know what their brain is doing? Amazingly--yet painfully and interestingly--humans can be riddled with these personal blind spots. We are conscious creatures, but unknowing. If we knew who we were, we wouldn't need psychologists, historians, neuroscientists, primatologists, archaeologists, or even writers. We'd just...know. Yet, we just don't. I find this to be an amazing part of us. As someone who works with people everyday hour-by-hour, I'm fascinated by the ways that we all experience things and how our own mind interprets them.</image:caption>
